Yanni provides a detailed synopsis of the buildings and the rationale behind the structures. More importantly, she grasped how society has attempted to help people with severe and persistent mental illnesses.Once the asylums closed, it is estimated that 1/3 of the homeless population suffers from schizophrenia. Based on the American Psychiatric Association’s website, one in five of prisoners of our expensive prisons are seriously mentally ill. Many of the severe and persistently mentally ill people had no place to go when the asylums closed---thus, they ended up homeless. Many got into trouble and ended up in our expensive and non-therapeutic prisons.I worked as a clinical psychologist at an older asylum that was originally constructed in 1854. I decided to write an Archie Bunker version of mental health based on my experiences—TWO DAYS AT THE ASYLUM. It was supposed to be a bizarre novel about the happenings within an asylum. During the writing of this politically incorrect novel, I realized society must return to the asylums or at least provide therapeutic housing for the severely and persistently mentally ill. It is crazy what our contemporary society does not do to help people who are psychotic.
In the vast world of architectural books there are volumes covering most construction types. Railroad buildings are one type which has multiple volumes. When it comes to building types of less-than-savory functions, such as meat packing plants (actually a fascinating building form) the literature is sparse, to say the least. Thus, it is a surprise that this book would find its way to market. Ms. Yanni has done her homework well and efficiently. Arranged in general chronological order she covers the development of lunatic asylums in America and, secondarily, in Great Britain, throughout the nineteenth century and into the twentieth century. It is an excellent book with excellent illustrations and I highly recommend it for anyone with an interest in the history of American lunatic asylums.
A work very much focused on the architecture of the Kirkbride plan for asylums and a work well worth investing in, should one's tastes lean in that direction.
The research that was completed for this book is so detailed as to capture a different time in our history and in the history of the insane asylum. She asks and answers such good questions and captures why these buildings were built in such a purposeful way. I loved it.
this is one creepy book,but well documented, and provides a context for mental illness treatment methods, and the role of architecture

Gotta be read. Verbal review just can't do the subject justice. It's got to be picture too --so a reader should go online and search "Historic mental institutions" etc. etc .There once was a "kingdom of confinement" that was big, big business. The populationwas that much smaller . . . yet there were that many committed to fill the nation-wide"asylum-chain" extent of institutionalization!?!?!?!?
It surpasses my expectations adding new information to those I had researched myself.
