Two thumbs up for this guide. I've been struggling to find a book that could help me to put together an on-line video course that would be easy to understand and informative to offer the guidance I needed to structure a meaningful training course. Most of them out there are too wordy or contain a lot of fluff. This exceeded my expectations and "over-delivered" in many ways. The author writes instructional materials as an occupation and has a knack for explaining things in a concise and effective manner. She offers great advice,guidance and resources that are very usable. If you're thinking about doing an on-line course, do yourself a favor and get this book. It inspired me to start on mine after I read it because I felt more prepared. I recommend it highly.
Shillington’s book is a straightforward, no-nonsense guide to online course design. If you’re expecting first-person tales from the e-learning trenches or meandering case studies, you won’t find them in this book. Similarly, if you're looking for a re-purposed academic dissertation, you won't find it here. This volume is for the course designer unafraid of getting his or her hair mussed, so bring your lunchbox. It's practical, helpful material presented at sea level, not 30,000 feet like many books dealing with e-learning. That said, I would like to have seen a chapter dedicated to Professional Learning Communities (PLCs), a peripheral collaboration framework that operates in tandem with online learning. Maybe in a future edition. All in all, Shillington has delivered. It's a solid beacon for anyone, especially a beginner, grappling with the challenges of online course design.

This was a great overview book. And was more in-depth than I would have expected. A lot of the thing in the book would be applicable to any kind of instruction, not just online. The end of the book around instruction design theories seemed a little rushed as if there was too much material and was kind of an afterthought. Hence the four stars. But still quite solid!
Straightforward and presented clearly, with step by step guidelines to help those getting started in this area. Helpful tips and ideas throughout the book. Highly recommend for all audiences, but particularly those considering creating an online class but may feel hesitant - this book will guide you through the process!
I really enjoyed reading this book. It's succinct, and full of principles you can apply to your instructional design work immediately. Well worth the time to read and money
