I was hoping to get a book with texts and questions, but this book doesn't have questions based on the articles. Admittedly, the articles are all great and will be of interest to students and teachers alike, but I needed questions and answers based on the texts. If you're looking for comprehension passages with questions, then this book isn't for you. However, if you're just looking for interesting articles on which you can formulate your own questions, then this book is worth it.

This provided some excellent articles and text samples, and even had some great paired texts. My problem was that the book spent too much time on what the teacher should say and not enough time focusing on skills. I have taught 7th grade reading for 15 years and have found better materials. I would have preferred skills based lessons based on the interesting reading passages. I will be able to use the texts as part of my instruction but will have to come up with supplemental materials to support it. I just don't like doing the same thing over and over so I'll use these as a starting point.

There is a major push to focus on more nonfiction/informational articles in the language arts clasroom. I am currently teaching 6,7, and 8th grade language arts. The hardest part about using nonfiction/informational articles is finding them. These guys have done all of the hard work for you and collected 75 different high interest nonfiction stories. I have already used one with my 7th and 8th graders, the Chicogo Tribune article about no homework in junior high. My 8th graders couldn't believe that this was a real article, I guess they thought it was a trick ; Anyway, the activity was easy to use, super quick prep, and sparked lots of interesting discussions. This is definitely staying on my desk and I know I am going to get a lot of use out of it. The authors give you lesson ideas and discussion starters, but honestly the best part of the book is that you can find a plenty of appropriate and high interst articles in one place!

I used this with ninth and tenth grade Spec Ed students with cognitive delays. They did enjoy the topics and I was able to show them that all newspaper articles have a bias; eventually, they could identify them on their own. Though common core kept emphasizing access to the curriculum, I think students being able to read interesting text that is accessible to them where they are so a valuable balance to being propped up through tests they need so much help deciphering the real meaning of. I did not use all the strategies, but found the selections could be used rather easily to guide students to write good summaries and they got some pride in that.

I have been using this book with 9th and 10th grade to practice comprehension strategies and they are ENGAGED! Once they get started talking about these articles, it's hard to get them to move on to the next class--the authors of the book have chosen highly engaging pieces to work with. The strategies are really helpful and my students can see how to apply them across their academic experience. I am a big fan of all of these authors' works, but this one is by far the winner!

I teach 8th grade language arts and bought this book in September; as my district was beginning Common Core State Standards, I was eager for the articles and strategies in the book. I am disappointed that the web support PROMISED AND INDICATED in the book, [...], gives me only a black screen - "Anything you need to project or download as part of a lesson is ready for use on our website . . ." (p. 19). If there is a special code that will enable use of the site, I hope someone will let me know at tannerp@gfusd.net.

I have been teaching for over ten years and I'm always looking for resources to help me grow as a teacher. I really like this book. It has reading strategies that you can start using the day you get the book. What I like is that it has sample lessons that are easy to follow, but then you can take them and apply to any other non-fiction articles. With common core and so many articles in my class, these multiple reading strategies will be very helpful. Some of the strategies I knew, but most are new. The articles are interesting for the high school population.

This book is exactly what I have been looking for. I gave it 4 stars because I would have appreciated if it had told me the age groups that the book was written for. I will use the lessons, but I am going to have to find articles that are appropriate for elementary. I would encourage authors to write a book for grades 3-5. Besides, finding the articles is what I was paying for. It's the part that is most time consuming!
