Good solid overview of two cities not well known to Western readers. This is a very good companion book to other texts dealing with Islam and Muslim cultures.
This is an information-packed little book, including quite a bit of history of the Shia-Sunni split. It is the fact that almost all of that topic's material is duplicated in the author's "The History of the Sunni and Shia Split: Understanding the Divisions within Islam" that dropped a star from my rating of this book. I guess it's not plagairism if you and your publisher give yourselves right to copy the material, but still...
