I have been using Lonely Planet Guides for more than 30 years and this is by far the worst one that I have encountered. My main objection is that the vast majority of the Sights and Activities section for nearly every place listed in the book are simply referrals to expensive guide services and outfitters. I find this completely antithetical to the Lonely Planet philosophy of budget travel. For Puerto Varas, the S&A section lists a walk of historic homes and a single church then lists 11 guided activities. One example of the prices charged by these outfitters are 1/2 day sea kayaking for $60, full day $120 and 2 day $270, not exactly in most budget travelers' price range. For nearby Frutillar the S&A section lists a music theater, a museum, and a guide that charges $260 per day (2 out of 3 reasonably priced activities ain't too bad for this guidebook). Based on this guidebook, you would think that there are virtually no self-guided (especially outside of town in the nearby national parks), affordable activities near either of these two towns. In conclusion, if you want to eat and sleep in the hippest (and sometimes affordable) places in Chile then buy this book, but if you are looking for affordable sights and activities then don't bother.
As usual these guides have useful information but they need some re-design from the point of view of usability. I would be very helpful to consider how people actually use these guides and how they can be made more user-friendly.
This is a good guide to get you started on Chile if you know nothing about the region. It lacks enough detail to be your only guide and fails to point out exeptions to many of things it states. I also found that the descriptions were very much written from a tourist point of view and did not give me deeper insight into the places I was going to visit.
The book has a lot of info on each region in Chile and some very helpful travel tips. This is a good buy for a trip to Chile.
