From Publishers Weekly
In this sequel to Thorn in My Heart, Higgs, a popular inspirational author, continues her 18th-century Scottish love story paralleling the biblical saga of Jacob and Esau, exemplifying sacrificial and patient love. Sisters Leana and Rose McBride are both in love with handsome Jamie McKie of Glentrool. After conniving with her father to spin a web of deceit and trickery, one sister wears a wedding ring and bears Jamie's child. But will the marriage consummated in the previous novel be honored? The challenges of adapting the scriptural story to the 18th century are daunting (polygamy, for example, wasn't acceptable in Scotland as it was in biblical times) and make for some contrivances that would be difficult to believe from any author not as talented as Higgs. Or, as the characters muse at one point, "the story was so implausible it had to be true." Admirably, Higgs keeps her protagonists multifaceted and readers' allegiances shifting as the story unfolds, although some may find one sister's contrition and sacrifice hard to swallow. A welcome glossary helps readers navigate the Scottish terms that lend color to the dialogue, and historical details-including church customs, medical and herbal information, and food descriptions-create a vivid backdrop. As the author of 21 books with more than two million copies in print, Higgs commands the affection of CBA readers, who will devour this novel eagerly and anticipate the story's resumption next spring in Whence Came a Prince. From Booklist
After retelling the biblical story of Jacob and Esau in her first historical novel, Thorn in My Heart (2003), Higgs continues with Rachel and Leah's story in this dramatic sequel set in eighteenth-century Scotland. Rose McBride, having been denied marriage to her true love, Jamie McKie, by her father, the Machiavellian Lachlan McBride, must watch as her sister Leana rejoices in the birth of a son and her husband Jamie's newly professed love. Bitter and betrayed, Rose finds distraction at boarding school with a new friend, Jane. The friends' nighttime excursion to a local witch reveals prophecies both promising and forbidding. Both girls return home for the holidays, and their fortunes begin to unfurl--Jane becomes deathly ill, and Rose is greeted with the news that Jamie and Leana's marriage may not be legal. Distractingly peppered with Scottish vocabulary (glossary in back) and melodramatic scenes and dialogue, this second entry in a proposed trilogy will satisfy romantic historical fiction fans and can also be suggested to readers of historic inspirational fiction. A readers' discussion guide is also included. Kaite MediatoreCopyright © American Library Association. All rights reserved

Wow... This book has so much in it; a love triangle, betrayal and a wicked parent - yes you read that right! PARENT!!! Not Step-parent! Doesn't that make it so much worse?…Fair is the Rose takes place during the 18th century in Scotland. The author, Liz Curtis Higgs continues the story she began with her book Thorn in my Heart - it's not necessary to read this first book though to understand this one, but OMG!!! It is so good!!! I really recommend it just because I think you'll really enjoy it.Back to explaining Fair is the Rose... the book centers on two sisters; Leana and Rose, their cousin Jamie and the sisters' father Lachlan McBride. You'll find that this story (along with book 1 of the series) Higgs is taking the Biblical story Jacob, Esau, Lea and Rachel and telling it from a perspective of only a couple of hundred years ago (rather than thousands) so we can better relate to how the people were feeling. I mean, seriously, there were chapters upon chapters where my heart was breaking for Leana. I was really able to gain a deeper understanding for what Rachel and especially Leah went through so many hundreds of years ago.Higgs was also able to show how generous and loving a person can be. No matter what was thrown at that girl, Leana looked toward the Lord and showed love and thoughtfulness toward everyone - even when they didn't deserve it!!!! I mean seriously!!! I think we all could learn a lesson from her!The book really showed how generous and loving a person can be (Leana) and also how selfish and thoughtless someone can be (Rose). It's a wonderful book and I really do recommend it. Be ready to cry throughout it because it is a tear-jerker. Personally I would get the first book of the series first, Thorn in My Heart, but it isn't necessary.
We return to 18th century Scotland to the thorny love triangle that is Jamie, Leana, and Rose. Desperately determined to have Jamie to herself despite his marriage for Leana, Rose employs every charm in her employ to bring his heart towards her own once more. She ignores her conscience thinking all is fair in love, never dreaming of the tragic consequences. Her sister, Leana, patient and full of faith in Jamie and God, never sees what the future has in store. But she dotes on Ian, hoping that she will one day be as happy as she once was.Jamie has every intention of returning to Glentrool to claim his stolen birthright. But again, things do not go well for him and his plans, and Lachlan delays him at every turn. Which McBride sister will be his bride upon his return? And will he be well received, or will Evan's jealousy that has taken root over two years finally yield it's bitter fruit? The saga continues in this breathtaking second installment of Higg's Scottish series. While I couldn't help but love each and every character development in this story, it broke my heart to read line after line of terrible, yet necessary details. I knew things had to happen, but that didn't make it any easier. There are moments of joy, pain, happiness, dread, peace, passion, faithfulness, heartache, and redemption, in every chapter. I reveled in every moment in all their lives, and I despaired with them when it seemed all was lost. While this book is very important to the story and a pivotal book in the series, it was hard to not get emotionally involved the more I read on. If you're not a fan of this author, by the time you get to this book in the Scottish saga you will be involved as you're going to get. Love, love, love this book and series. Highly recommended.
This series by Liz Curtis Higgs takes the biblical account of Jacob, Leah, and Rachel and fictionalizes it into a Scottish tale in the 1700's. After getting past the Scottish brogue in the first novel, these books are a fascinating read. The author weaves the story and the characters well and stays true to biblical events, while changing them just enough to fit into her fictional story. Main characters become heroes/heroines and then become vilians just as quickly.I've always loved fictional stories based on biblical stories because it allows one to imagine what the person really went through. The biblical accounts are often short and emotions are often looked over while we read the events. A series like this truly puts those emotions and events into a real life situation, although it is a real life situation in the 1700's.Highly recommended for those who love historical fiction.
As usual, what I have read here is very good. This one had me really guessing the outcome. I had not realized it was the second in a series, so now I have the read the third one, but that is ok. I doubt I will be disappointed. Very good writing, very good story line and most of all, I love the way Christ is glorified throughout the whole thing.
This book follows A Thorn In My Heart which I loved and quickly ordered the next two in the series. There is no way that the plot can be called predictable and it has such character since it is written around the 18th century in Scotland. If you enjoy Higgs writing or even Irish type stories, then you will love this book. The first book leaves you amazed at the events but this book is not boring and a sudden turn of events keeps the reader guessing and entranced. I give it 5 stars because I couldn't put the first book down once I got going and couldn't wait to buy the second two.
Loved the setting, the history, but some of the plot may have been correct with the times. Nevertheless, the suffering wen on too, too long.
The book was wonderful. I was amazed how the sisters could love each other so much in spite of the fact that both of them were in love with the same man, and each one of them wanted to have his heart. The marvelous details again brought you right to the scenes as you would be there experiencing everything through your body. I could feel the mist in the air and all sensations that surroundings would bring. The story was well written!
This book is so good, I could scarcely put it down, there are parts that are a real tear jerker, so keep your tissues handy.
