I can only say it was a delightful series and I didn't want it to end! I love historical fiction and this is how I came upon Patrick Taylor! I became absorbed in the endearing characters, and found myself laughing out loud at the wit of this author. The books are cleverly told, and have wonderful humorous, and sometimes heartbreaking stories that carry you into the workings of a beloved community, it's doctor's and the villagers within. But, it doesn't stop there! Add the historical fiction; medical knowledge, facts, information and skill; Navel strategy; author's notes, glossary, (a must read!); and recipes! I am sure I didn't cover it all. I am truly fascinated by the creativity inside these delightful pages. Happy reading!
I very much wanted a good Irish read...and I have found it in the writings of author Patrick Taylor. His series of delightful books remind me a lot of the "All Creatures Great and Small" book. This opening volume is a period piece set in Ireland with physicians as the protagonists. It is a light, fun read with good doses of medical problems as the center pieces of the action in the novel. The characters are well drawn and the scenes are beautifully described. The characters are richly detailed....so as for me to care and want to read on to find out more about them. Again, fun, light read for those who want to spend some amazing time with new friends in the countryside of old Ireland.
...it should be. This book reminds me of a show like Cranford that’d be great on PBS if it’s not there already. Well written, the story of a new doctor who comes to a small Irish Village to train under an older doctor. There are several characters with good descriptions . Many illnesses that’d be common for a small country doctor. I’d guess this first book took place in the early 1960s. I have yet to read any others, but if you’re into this sor5 of book, there are many books in this series. Especially good on audio.
I read a lot of murder mysteries, but sometimes I need some just good storytelling with no evil undertones. That's when I turned to authors like Jan Karon, and now Patrick Taylor. I can hardly wait to continue to sprinkle these lovely - and quirky - characters and feel-good stories among my other reading. I just may have to plan a trip to Ireland to see if I can locate some semblance of the world in Patrick Taylor's books.
I enjoyed this book very much. Not quite as good as Dr Herriot but still very enjoyable. My biggest problem is that the book is relatively brief and the subsequent books in the series are about $7 or so for the Kindle edition, so it would cost quite a bit to read the whole series. So, I won't be buying anymore books in the series, as I am not willing to pay that much, especially for light reading. It's a shame that the books are not a wee bit longer and priced less, especially for the ebook editions.
we all live in such chaos these days. when I need a break, every night, this book provides. family is from Ireland and daughter now lives there so provides some comfort . in really love how this hot shot doctor is shown there is so much more than being clinical. I so wish the doctors of this day were like this.
"James Herriot meets Maeve Binchy" in this charming story about a new doctor who signs on to be the assistant to an established GP in 1960s Northern Ireland. There isn't one big drama in the plot of this story - the drama comes from everyday life in a small Irish village. The book follows Barry Laverty as he learns about practicing medicine, friendship, and love by working with the unique Dr. Fingal O'Reilly. Most importantly Barry discovers that some of the most important lessons in life don't come from a book.I enjoyed the character of Fingal who is kindhearted and caring behind his sometimes gruff exterior and unconventional methods of practicing medicine. Barry is an intelligent young man and a good person who wants to do the right thing. For the most part, I like his character, but he is quick to jump to conclusions over and over and doesn't seem to learn to get all the facts first before making a judgment. In spite of his flaws, Barry is an interesting and likeable main character and I enjoyed this book that has a relaxing pace, but remains interesting from the beginning to the end.
